VOCAB MORPH LAB
An after-school learning group for grades 4-9
the purpose
Word Structure Understanding
Morphology helps students dissect words into their components, enabling them to understand how words are formed and how their meanings can change. This knowledge is essential for decoding unfamiliar words.
Vocabulary Expansion
By learning about roots and affixes, students can expand their vocabulary significantly. For example, knowing the root "scrib" means "to write" helps them understand words like "describe," "inscribe," and "manuscript."
Contextual Clues
Morphological knowledge equips students to infer the meanings of new words based on their components. This is especially useful in academic texts where complex vocabulary is common.
Enhanced Understanding
Students who grasp morphology can break down complex words, aiding comprehension. This ability allows them to engage with more challenging texts effectively.
Increased Engagement
When students can understand and use a broader range of vocabulary, they are more likely to engage with the material, enhancing their overall learning experience.
Improved Inference Skills
Morphological knowledge supports students in making inferences about the meaning of texts. They can use their understanding of word parts to deduce meanings and grasp the overall message more easily.
Efficient Decoding
Familiarity with prefixes, suffixes, and roots allows students to decode words more quickly. This efficiency contributes to smoother reading comprehension and greater fluency.
Automatic Word Recognition
As students become more proficient with morphological patterns and their meanings, they recognize words automatically, reducing the cognitive load while reading. This allows them to focus on comprehension rather than word recognition.
Confidence Boost
A strong understanding of morphology can increase students' confidence in their reading abilities. They feel empowered to tackle unfamiliar texts, enhancing fluency and engagement.

FAQ
GENERAL INFORMATION
When does the class meet?
The class meets twice weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:00 to 7:55 pm.
WHAT IS THE CLASS size?
The program has a total capacity of 6 seats for combined grade levels 4-9. The small group size is intentional, allowing us to provide more personalized attention and support to ensure each child can excel academically. We believe in prioritizing the quality of education over the quantity of students.
Why Must My Child Complete a Reading Diagnostic Test For Admittance?
The Vocab Morph Lab class is designed for students at or near grade-level standards seeking additional academic enrichment and support in reading comprehension.
To ensure we meet the needs of our students, all applicants must complete a reading diagnostic assessment to demonstrate medium to high ability in word decoding (phonics and fluency). This assessment will help us confirm that your child’s reading skills are at least slightly below grade level, rather than significantly behind.
Please note that the Knowledge Builders class is not intended to provide intensive, one-on-one intervention for students with significant skill gaps. We focus on maintaining a small group environment that effectively supports students in meeting or exceeding academic standards.
However, if you are unsure whether your child is on grade level, we encourage you to schedule a diagnostic test with us before registering them for the course.
What Happens If My Child Does NOT Meet Testing Standards?
Suppose your child’s diagnostic results show they are significantly below decoding abilities for this class. In that case, we will happily recommend other academic support programs that better fit their learning needs.
We will also partially refund registration costs to any student who doesn’t meet the admission requirements.
What Discounts Do You Offer?
For the Vocab Morph Lab program, we offer a sibling discount on the monthly subscription fee. While discounts are available for additional siblings, they do not apply to registration costs.
If your child(ren) enrolls in more than one after-school class, you’ll receive a discount on the monthly fee for each additional class.
We also provide flexible payment plan options through Klarna and Afterpay, allowing parents to pay for the program in smaller, manageable installments instead of one lump sum.
Additionally, if you pay for multiple months in advance, you’ll receive a discount on the total cost. The more months you pay for at once, the greater the discount you’ll enjoy.
Will The Program Help With Homework?
No, the program is not designed to help with assigned homework directly. However, the program will cover several critical academic skills students can use to complete their teacher-assigned homework more effectively. The program is intended to provide additional educational support and practice rather than replacing the role of parents in helping with homework.
We believe parents need to be involved in their child’s homework and learning process. By helping with homework, parents can stay informed about what their child is working on in the classroom. This allows parents to better prepare their child for upcoming tests and assessments.
The program is designed to benefit students from all educational backgrounds – whether they attend public school, private school, or are homeschooled. The skill-building activities are aligned with general grade-level standards so students can get extra practice on the key concepts they need to be successful in the next grade. With this additional support, students will be better equipped to tackle their regular homework assignments.
The program aims to empower students to become more independent and successful learners by strengthening foundational skills.
Will The Program Help With Standardized Test Prep?
No, the program does not directly provide standardized test prep. We believe that teaching solely to the test can lead to foundational skill gaps for many students. However, we do provide test prep services. Rather than focus on test prep for this class, our approach is to build a solid academic skill foundation in core knowledge.
By equipping students with a strong foundation of grade-level skills and knowledge, we believe they will be well-prepared to succeed on any standardized tests. Our program aims to support long-term academic growth, not just short-term test performance.
What is the refund policy?
The Vocab Morph Lab program has a strict no-refund policy on registration and monthly subscription fees, with one exception: a partial refund may be issued for registration costs if a student is not admitted due to diagnostic testing indicating they are significantly below grade level in phonics and fluency.
We encourage parents to review their child’s recent standardized test scores before registering to ensure they meet the minimum academic requirements. If diagnostic testing reveals that a child is significantly behind grade level, we will refund part of the registration fee. However, no refunds will be provided for students accepted into the program.
This policy allows us to maintain high-quality, personalized academic support tailored for students performing at or above grade level. We want to set clear expectations to avoid disappointment or financial burden on families.
