Critical thinking

A strong knowledge base enables students to analyze, synthesize, and evaluate information more effectively. This is essential for interpreting complex texts and engaging in discussions.

engagement

Knowledge-rich content makes reading more engaging. When students can connect with the material, they are more likely to be motivated to read and learn.

EQUITY IN LEARNING

Addressing the knowledge gap ensures all students access the same foundational information, vital for equitable learning opportunities. This is particularly important in diverse classrooms.

IMPROVED COMPREHENSION

Students with a broader knowledge base are better equipped to understand and engage with challenging texts. They can make inferences and draw connections, leading to deeper comprehension.

ACADEMIC VOCABULARY DEVELOPMENT

Knowledge of various subjects, such as science, social studies, and literature, introduces students to specific vocabulary relevant to those fields. This exposure helps them acquire academic language, which is often more complex than everyday language.

Enhanced vocabulary

A rich knowledge base supports learning new words and phrases, as students encounter them in context. This leads to a more robust academic vocabulary.

GREATER FLUENCY

With a strong vocabulary and comprehension skills, students can read more fluently, allowing them to focus on understanding rather than decoding words.

BETTER ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

FAQ

GENERAL INFORMATION

The class meets twice weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 to 6:55 pm.

The program has a total capacity of 6 seats for combined grade levels 4-9. The small group size is intentional, allowing us to provide more personalized attention and support to ensure each child can excel academically. We believe in prioritizing the quality of education over the quantity of students.

The Knowledge Builders class is designed for students at or near grade-level standards seeking additional academic enrichment and support in reading comprehension.

To ensure we meet the needs of our students, all applicants must complete a reading diagnostic assessment to demonstrate medium to high ability in word decoding (phonics and fluency). This assessment will help us confirm that your child’s reading skills are at least slightly below grade level, rather than significantly behind.

Please note that the Knowledge Builders class is not intended to provide intensive, one-on-one intervention for students with significant skill gaps. We focus on maintaining a small group environment that effectively supports students in meeting or exceeding academic standards.

However, if you are unsure whether your child is on grade level, we encourage you to schedule a diagnostic test with us before registering them for the course.

Suppose your child’s diagnostic results show they are significantly below decoding abilities for this class. In that case, we will happily recommend other academic support programs that better fit their learning needs.

We will also partially refund registration costs to any student who doesn’t meet the admission requirements.

For the Knowledge Builders program, we offer a sibling discount on the monthly subscription fee. While discounts are available for additional siblings, they do not apply to registration costs.

If your child(ren) enrolls in more than one after-school class, you’ll receive a discount on the monthly fee for each additional class.

We also provide flexible payment plan options through Klarna and Afterpay, allowing parents to pay for the program in smaller, manageable installments instead of one lump sum.

Additionally, if you pay for multiple months in advance, you’ll receive a discount on the total cost. The more months you pay for at once, the greater the discount you’ll enjoy.

No, the program is not designed to help with assigned homework directly. However, the program will cover several critical academic skills students can use to complete their teacher-assigned homework more effectively. The program is intended to provide additional educational support and practice rather than replacing the role of parents in helping with homework.

We believe parents need to be involved in their child’s homework and learning process. By helping with homework, parents can stay informed about what their child is working on in the classroom. This allows parents to better prepare their child for upcoming tests and assessments.

The program is designed to benefit students from all educational backgrounds – whether they attend public school, private school, or are homeschooled. The skill-building activities are aligned with general grade-level standards so students can get extra practice on the key concepts they need to be successful in the next grade. With this additional support, students will be better equipped to tackle their regular homework assignments.

The program aims to empower students to become more independent and successful learners by strengthening foundational skills.

No, the program does not directly provide standardized test prep. We believe that teaching solely to the test can lead to foundational skill gaps for many students. However, we do provide test prep services. Rather than focus on test prep for this class, our approach is to build a solid academic skill foundation in core knowledge.

By equipping students with a strong foundation of grade-level skills and knowledge, we believe they will be well-prepared to succeed on any standardized tests. Our program aims to support long-term academic growth, not just short-term test performance.

The Knowledge Builders program has a strict no-refund policy on registration and monthly subscription fees, with one exception: a partial refund may be issued for registration costs if a student is not admitted due to diagnostic testing indicating they are significantly below grade level in phonics and fluency.

We encourage parents to review their child’s recent standardized test scores before registering to ensure they meet the minimum academic requirements. If diagnostic testing reveals that a child is significantly behind grade level, we will refund part of the registration fee. However, no refunds will be provided for students accepted into the program.

This policy allows us to maintain high-quality, personalized academic support tailored for students performing at or above grade level. We want to set clear expectations to avoid disappointment or financial burden on families.
